In this exercise, the robots are to fan out and find the ultrasonic emitter located at the other end of the parking lot. The emitter is the thing on the white boxes in the second picture.

The robots communicate and cooperate with other agents on other robots and stationary computers to find the target and tell the other robots about it. A description of the robot's internal architecture is in the CougaarME Architecture Guide.
